Shotgun Start: 9 AM

at Elm Fork Shooting Sports

What to Expect & FAQs

  • What if I don't own a shotgun?

    • Shotguns are available to rent from the Pro Shop at Elm Fork. Most people shoot a 12-gauge shotgun for a little more power, which also means a little more recoil or "kick" back on your shoulder. Some prefer a 20-gauge. Both are extremely effective in shooting clays!

  • Do I need to bring my own shotgun?

    • If you have your own shotgun, please bring it. Elm Fork does have some to rent as well.

  • What's the attire? Any clothing recommendations?

    • You must wear closed-toe shoes. In the past, many team members have been comfortable in jeans and company-branded polos or shirts. It's Texas, so layers are always a good idea because it may start out chilly but end up super warm once you get out on the course!

  • Do I need earplugs or protective eyewear?

    • Protective eyewear, such as sunglasses or clear glasses, is required while you're on the course -- even if you aren't shooting. Disposable earplugs will be provided, so you don’t need to bring your own. Both are mandatory for all participants. If you forget your protective eyewear, you can purchase some at the pro shop.

  • Do I need my own shotgun shells, or is it provided?

    • You don't need to bring your own ammunition— GAF, the shells sponsor, will provide each shooter 100 shells.

  • What safety protocols should I be aware of?

    • Do not load the gun until in the designated shooting position and ready to fire.

    • Never load more than two shells in a gun.

    • Elm Fork will have a mandatory safety talk in the pavilion just before you go out to your stations.

  • Are there any specific techniques or tips for beginners?

    • Focus on the target and follow through after you pull the trigger. Don't stop your swing as soon as you shoot.

    • Ensure the shotgun is consistently mounted on your shoulder and cheek for better accuracy.

    • The gun should feel comfortable against your shoulder, with your head slightly forward to align your eyes with the barrel.

    • Don't rush your shots. Take your time to set up properly for each shot.

  • Is there a preferred stance or way to hold the shotgun?

    • Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, with your weight slightly forward. Your front foot should point towards the target, and your back foot should be at a slight angle.

    • Hold the shotgun firmly but not too tightly. Ensure your grip allows for smooth movement.

  • How do I keep score, and what's the typical scoring system?

    • On your scorecard, mark an 'X' for a hit and an 'O' for a miss.

    • You'll typically shoot 10 or 12 times at each station.

    • Take turns with a teammate on keeping score for each other.

  • Do I have a chance at winning?

We have three levels of shooting experience!

    • Your team will compete in one of three experience levels, with a winning team crowned in each category, thanks to Beacon Roofing Supply, our awards sponsor:

      • Sharp Shooter Level: For teams with seasoned shotgun users who have extensive experience and are looking for a challenging competition.

      • Target Enthusiast Level: Ideal for teams with some familiarity with shotguns. They've handled a shotgun a few times and are ready for a moderate level of competition.

      • Rookie Shot Level: Designed for teams where most members are beginners. This level is perfect for those who might be shooting for the first time or have only tried it once before.

  • What's included for $1,000 per team?

    • Breakfast: Start your day with a hearty breakfast, provided by our sponsor, IKO.

    • Lunch and Drinks: Enjoy a satisfying lunch and refreshing beverages, all included in your registration.

    • Golf Cart: No need to worry about getting around the course -- your team's golf carts are covered by our sponsor, Gulfeagle Supply.

    • Photograph: Be sure Kelle finds you while you're out shooting, so you can download your picture, sponsored by GAF Commercial.

  • Where do we start?

    • When you pull in, go towards the right to the shotgun side of Elm Fork.

    • Registration, sponsored by Ensley Benitez Law PC, will take place from 8 to 8:45 am in the pavilion, sponsored by Roadrunner Roofing Supply.

    • Shooting will start at 9 am, and takes place on two different courses.

    • Once you are done, stick around for a cigar, brought to you by Beacon Roofing Supply.

  • What else is there to do?

    • Raffle Prizes: Be sure to purchase raffle tickets to win some of our awesome raffle prizes, sponsored by Polyglass. We also have a gun raffle, for $1000 to Cabela's, sponsored by GAF Commercial.

    • Networking Opportunities: Connect with fellow professionals, exchange ideas, and build valuable relationships throughout the day. Be sure to thank the station sponsors as you're on the course who also help make this fun day possible.

    • Top Male and Female Shooters: Compete for first place with your team and also have the chance to win individual prizes for top male and female shooters.
