The North TX Roofing Contractors Association (NTRCA) will donate the material and labor to build a new roof for a Grand Prairie couple in need on Friday, March 28, 2014. Pictured to the right is the home, waiting for its new NTRCA-donated roof!

Toward the end of 2011, Mrs. Joann Smith, a beloved preschool teacher for ten years at the Shepherd of Life Lutheran Church in Arlington, Texas began having medical issues, with numerous stays in the hospital.  It was determined that black mold in her home, which developed after a tree fell and damaged her roof, was contributing to her breathing problems. Joann and her husband tried to repair the damage to their home as best they could at the time, but the situation worsened, and their home, where they had lived for 35 years, became uninhabitable.

Soon after, members of the Shepherd of Life Lutheran Church started raising money to rebuild the Smith's home. Congregants were able to collect enough money to begin the process, and the dilapidated home was torn down at the end of 2012. The church continued to raise money for two years. Congregant Sarah Wolff, who spearheaded the efforts, also got a local home builder involved (Deville Custom Homes), to rebuild the Smith’s house. After some delays with permits, the foundation has been poured and framing has been done.

Now, the home needs a roof, and members of the North Texas Roofing Contractors Association have stepped up to donate the materials and labor needed to build the Smith’s new roof. The NTRCA team will be roofing the home, located at 822 NE 28th St. in Grand Prairie, on Friday, March 28 (weather permitting).

NTRCA members donating materials and labor to the project include:  ABC Supply Melissa, ABC Supply White Settlement, ER Systems, KPost Company, Polston Sales and Marketing/Ross Manufacturing, Springree Roofing and Restoration, SuperRoofman, TriVAN Roofing and Waterproofing and West End Roofing and Siding. AJ Huckaby, NTRCA president-elect and owner of Springtree Roofing and Restoration is leading the project for NTRCA.

"Community service is a major part of NTRCA's mission," said Karen Vermaire Fox, executive director of NTRCA and owner of Quindigo Management, a Fort Worth-based company that manages trade associations. "After we learned of the Smith’s needs, the NTRCA board unanimously agreed to adopt this project, and we look forward to providing the Smiths a safe, secure, beautiful roof for their new home.”

The North Texas Roofing Contractors Association (NTRCA) -- a regional association for residential and commercial roofing contractors, distributors, manufacturers and associates who maintain the highest industry standards -- will donate the materials and labor to roof two homes December 8 through 10 in South Dallas for two elderly homeowners in need, working with Rebuilding Together and MRCA (Midwest Roofing Contractors Association).

Roofing work will be done December 8 and 9 on the home of Ruthie Walker, an elderly disabled woman whose home is currently unlivable due to excessive roof leaks and no central heat. She worked for many years at a local jail called the Lew Sterrett Justice Center before she sustained an injury on the job that left her permanently disabled, and she cannot afford to repair her roof. December 9 and 10, NTRCA will also reroof the home of Gus Shelton, Jr., a 78-year-old Navy veteran, retired U.S. Postal Service worker and retired truck driver. Mr. Shelton has lived in his home for the past 52 years, and his roof is currently on the verge of collapsing and needs to be replaced. He had to retire earlier than expected from his job as a truck driver, due to major repairs needed on his 18-wheeler truck, which was made famous by local TV news footage several years ago when it was picked up and thrown around on I-20 by a tornado. In addition to NTRCA’s roofing work, MRCA’s Young Contractors Council will paint and do general landscaping work at both homes on December 10.

NTRCA members donating materials, labor and/or monetary donations to help cover labor costs include: 360 Innovations; ABC Supply; Atlas Roofing; Buzz Roofing; Crosby Roofing; Cutler-Smith, PC; Empire Disposal (providing dumpsters for old roof materials); Frazier Roofing & Guttering; IKO; Kovac Group; KPost Company (providing safety training and safety oversight); Polston Sales and Marketing (Geocel and NeverLeak); Republic Service; Scott Exteriors; SpringTree Roofing and Restoration; SuperRoofman LLC; Texas Star Roofing Inc; Texas Traditions; Titans Contractors; TriVAN Roofing & Construction (providing safety training and safety oversight); WestEnd Roofing and Wholesale Roofing Supply. AJ Huckaby, NTRCA president-elect and owner of Springtree Roofing and Restoration is leading the project for NTRCA.

"Community service is a major part of NTRCA's mission, and we typically adopt a community project each year," said Karen Vermaire Fox, executive director of NTRCA and owner of Quindigo Management, a Fort Worth-based company that manages trade associations. "After we learned of these two homeowners’ needs from Rebuilding Together, the NTRCA board unanimously agreed to adopt these projects, and our members jumped on board to generously donate money, materials and labor. We look forward to providing Ms. Walker and Mr. Shelton with safe, dry, beautiful roofs, just in time for a happy holiday season.”

NTRCA 2015 Community Service Projects

During 2015, the North Texas Roofing Contractors Association adopted 3 community service projects: 1) for a homeowner in Fort Worth, Texas who was ripped off by a scam artist; 2) for a struggling single mom raising a daughter with brain cancer in Aubrey, Texas and 3) a church in Dallas, Texas.

2015 NTRCA Community Service Project in Fort Worth

Sharon Thompson worked and saved and bought her first home at age 50 – a dream come true for her! Then her home was hit hard in October 2014 by North Texas storms that caused her roof to leak. Unfortunately, she was duped by a roofing scam artist, who ran off with her insurance money…leaving her with a leaky roof that only got worse.

NTRCA learned about Sharon from CBS 11 Consumer Justice Reporter Cristin Severance and adopted Sharon’s home to re-roof in November, 2015 as part of the North Texas Roofing Contractors Association (NTRCA) community service program.

NTRCA member Brettco Roofing, based in Fort Worth and owned by Holly Green, led the project and generously donated the labor (roof tear-off, re-roof and material disposal labor).

The materials are were generously donated by NTRCA member West End Roofing in Fort Worth and NTRCA Lomanco.

CBS 11 ran a 2-segment story on the project:

2015 NTRCA Community Service Project in Aubrey

A sweet family in need – a single mom and her daughter who has been fighting brain cancer for 16 years (since she was 9) do a lot of service work in their community, despite their own struggles. The roof on their home in Aubrey, Texas had several leaks and continued to get worse. The roof desperately needed replaced, but the homeowner simply couldn’t afford it.

NTRCA members stepped up to help. Wilson Roofing, based in Aubrey and co-owned by Steve and Darlene Wilson, donated the labor for the project. NTRCA members Gulfeagle Supply and GAF donated the materials.

2015 NTRCA Community Service Project for Church in Dallas

Abundant Faith Church in Dallas, Texas, led by Pastor Phillips, had been living with a leaky roof for quite some time. Unable to afford a new roof, the Pastor and his congregation had been praying and searching for a solution. At the urging of one of his congregation members, Mrs. Jordan (NTRCA adopted her roof for its 2012 community service project and re-roofed her leaking home in time for the holidays), Pastor Phillips contacted NTRCA. Members tarped the roof to keep it dry, and then NTRCA members re-roofed the church in mid-December…just in time for a dry and Merry Christmas!

NTRCA member Trinity Roofing and Construction, based in Mansfield, Texas and co-owned by Paul Duncan, donated the labor for the project.

NTRCA members who generously donated supplies included: ABC Supply, Tamko, Chemlink, Interwrap Corp, Mulehide and Lomanco.

NTRCA member Empire Disposal donated their waste disposal services for the project.

Anna Montgomery, a 79-year old woman who lives in Wylie, is on a small fixed income. When the recent grapefruit-sized hail hit her home (along with most homes throughout Wylie), she didn't know what to do. She doesn't have insurance, doesn't have any family nearby, and she couldn't afford to pay someone to tarp her roof (let alone replace it).

NTRCA past board president AJ Huckaby, co-owner of Springtree Roofing and Restoration, learned about Anna's situation and visited her home.

"When I arrived, the ceiling in her living room, dinning room, kitchen and bedroom were caving in due to the recent rains. She had massive holes in her roof from the hail storm. Because she didn't have the money, the roof was never tarped after the hail storm, allowing the water to come in. We immediately tarped the roof and removed the wet insulation and drywall. Then we found out that she did not have insurance and is on a small fixed income. Unfortunately, she does not have family or friends to help out.  We sat down and explored other ways for her to gain the funds needed to put her home back together, with no luck. My heart sunk for this lady, and I felt that there was no way I could walk away from that situation knowing this lady had no way of putting her home back together. After discussing with my business partner, we simply decided to help her out."

Thanks to Springtree Roofing & Restoration and NTRCA members, Anna is getting a new roof!  During a recent NTRCA fishing tournament, NTRCA members pitched in to donate $4,500 in total to purchase the materials needed and fellow NTRCA member SupermanRoofing donated another $500.

We are so proud of our members and the good work they do in our community! Way to go AJ/Springtree and other generous members of the NTRCA!

Just in time for the holidays, the North Texas Roofing Contractors Association (NTRCA) donated materials, money and labor to tear off and re-roof the Greater Progressive Church of God in Christ in Fort Worth last week.

A beacon of light for more than 5 decades, the church has, in recent years, fallen on hard times due to many unexpected and devastating life changes in its Pastor’s life.

Dr. J.L. Johnson, a navy veteran, has served as the leader of the church for 57 years. In 2010, Pastor Johnson's wife, Alma Johnson, was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer, followed by a mastectomy, radiation and chemotherapy treatments, all of which left her completely bedridden. Shortly thereafter, the Johnson’s home caught fire and, despite attempts by the pastor and a neighbor to rescue Mrs. Johnson, they were unsuccessful. Grief-stricken by the loss of his wife and seeing her remains after she suffered third degree burns over 90% of her body, Pastor Johnson then struggled with prolonged depression and resulting financial hardships. In 2013, he had a debilitating stroke. To make matters worse, the church lost many of its members during this time. As the church's roof started to deteriorate and leak, the church could not afford to keep up with repairs, let alone re-roof the building.

When NTRCA learned of the church's story and the condition of its roof, staff and members quickly put the wheels in motion to gather member donations of materials, money and labor, so this project could be completed in time for Christmas.

“This is the largest community service project NTRCA has undertaken in years,” said Karen Vermaire Fox, executive director of NTRCA. “It’s important to us that we help this church rebuild in time for them to hold leak-free, worry-free Christmas services this year.”

The entire congregation is incredibly grateful for the generosity of NTRCA's members. Pastor Johnson, now 91, is especially happy to see his beloved church restored.

A special thank you to our generous NTRCA members and to CBS 11 and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram for covering this story.

Read the Fort Worth Star-Telegram story: "Christmas Miracle" Gives Fort Worth Church Much-Needed New Roof

Just in time for the holidays, the North Texas Roofing Contractors Association (NTRCA) donated materials, money and labor to tear off and re-roof the Greater Progressive Church of God in Christ in Fort Worth last week.

A beacon of light for more than 5 decades, the church has, in recent years, fallen on hard times due to many unexpected and devastating life changes in its Pastor's life.

When NTRCA learned of the church's story and the condition of its roof, staff and members quickly put the wheels in motion to gather member donations of materials, money and labor, so this project could be completed in time for Christmas.

The entire congregation is incredibly grateful for the generosity of NTRCA's members. Pastor Johnson, now 91, is especially happy to see his beloved church restored.

THANK YOU to the following NTRCA members who donated labor, money and/or materials to make this amazing community service project happen!
